Renewables Grid Integration Study Costa Rica

Energynautics, together with DIgSILENT, Meister Consultants Group and Fernando Montoya, conducted a grid study of the Costa Rican transmission system with the goal of integrating wind and solar energy into the currently primarily hydro-based system. Variable renewable energy sources are intended to help Costa Rica, which already has an almost completely CO2-free energy sector, to keep up with growing electricity demand. Furthermore, some of the best wind locations in the world are located in Costa Rica, drawing considerable interest from investors. Using various renewable energy development scenarios for the years 2018 and 2024, arising system stability and grid overloading issues were investigated. Yearly optimization runs in ENAplan and load flow, contingency and stability analysis in DIgSILENT PowerFactory were conducted to develop technical and economic recommendations for the further development of the Costarican power system.
