Advancing the Digitalisation of Greece’s Power System

4 May 2026 marked the official start of a new project aiming to advance smart grid technology deployment in Greece. Hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Athens, the event launched a dedicated technical assignment within the broader “Technical support for a green and smart electricity system in Greece” (Grids4Greece) initiative. As the commissioned technical partner, Energynautics delivered a training session on grid digitalisation for over 60 industry representatives and will continue to provide specialist expertise throughout the project duration.

Strategic Context and Grid Transformation

The transformation of power grids into smart grids can significantly enhance the large-scale integration of renewable energies. Smart grid technology enables system operators to monitor systems in real-time and dynamically manage distributed generation, storage facilities, and flexible consumption, ultimately increasing overall grid stability and reliability.

While Greek system operators have already made considerable progress in modernising their infrastructure, this project aims to further this momentum. By establishing a robust framework for performance measurement and strategic investment, it supports the Greek regulatory authority RAAEY and system operators IPTO and HEDNO S.A. in navigating the next phase of grid digitalisation.

Key Objectives and Technical Pillars

In this context, an Energynautics expert team, led by CEO Dr. Eckehard Tröster, will assist the project partners by focusing on three strategic pillars:

  • Smart Grid Indicator Framework: Developing a validated set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on ACER and CEER methodologies and EU best practices to track development progress.
  • Digitalisation Assessment: Conducting a comprehensive evaluation of Greece’s current infrastructure, benchmarking results against other EU Member States to identify barriers to scaling up smart grid technologies.
  • 2040 Strategic Roadmap: Provide actionable regulatory and operational recommendations to guide long-term investments and innovative practices across both transmission and distribution grids until 2040.

Technical Training and Stakeholder Alignment

The kick-off meeting gathered key representatives from GIZ, RAAEY, IPTO, and HEDNO to align on the project methodology and implementation plan. Energynautics experts conducted an introductory training session to establish a shared understanding of technical core concepts among all stakeholders.

The training provided a structured overview of grid digitalisation, an outlook on relevant smart grid technologies, and established EU frameworks. Further sessions explored critical enablers such as data management, cybersecurity requirements, potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI), and the practical challenges of implementing these digital solutions.

The Grids4Greece initiative is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and financed by the European Union via the Reform and Investment Task Force (SG REFORM) under the Technical Support Instrument (TSI).
