Energynautics Supports GIZ and PLN with Grid Code Expertise and Long-Term Power System Planning
Energynautics continues to support Indonesia’s energy transition through the Green Energy Project (RE2Grid), a continuation of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (REEP2). Commissioned by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, we support the state utility PLN Indonesia Power in modernising the national power system and advance the secure integration of variable renewable energy (VRE). Our current activities focus technical knowledge exchange and the revision of Indonesia’s grid connection code.
Digitalising Expertise on Power System Planning
To build sustainable local capacity, Energynautics is creating a specialised e-learning programme on long-term electricity planning for PLN’s digital platform. During the last mission in February, our experts aligned with PLN’s long-term electricity planning and digital teams on the design of the e-learning course. This comprehensive curriculum will train PLN engineers in long-term planning fundamentals. It will prepare them to navigate the technical changes and complex system dynamics driven by the increased integration of VRE generation and distributed resources. The course covers load forecasting, generation, transmission and distribution planning, and addresses distributed energy resources (DER) and hosting capacity maps. At last, it comprises modules on investment and corporate financing, which are pivotal to long-term electricity planning. While the training addresses Indonesian practices, it also includes international best practices and outlooks.
Technical Milestones
The Jamali Grid Code Revision
In parallel, we are supporting the review and revision of the Jamali Transmission Grid Connection Code together with PLN and GIZ. During the February mission, Energynautics grid code expert Eckard Quitmann conducted an intensive technical workshop for PLN staff to bridge grid stability theory with practical utility operations and modern industrial practices.
The training focused on the technical characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of wind-, solar-PV- and BESS power plants using power electronics, showing how to leverage these resources to maximise power system benefits. It also addressed the critical engineering requirements for a high-VRE system, focusing on dynamic behaviour and grid stability management with inverter-based resources (IBRs) as opposed to traditional rotating machines. The sessions explored international best practices related to steady-state reactive power capability, voltage and frequency ride-throughrequirements, contributions to voltage- and frequency control, and typical power-quality aspects.
This knowledge directly informed practical recommendations for the Grid Code, unlocking the full potential of new generators while ensuring their technical and economic feasibility.
Future Outlook
Other related projects have seen significant progress, including the techno-economic comparison of PV-BESS vs. thermal plants for the Sulawesi grid and initial analysis of flexibility potential within the Jamali power system. With our next mission scheduled for late summer, Energynautics remains committed to paving a reliable, decarbonised path for Indonesia’s power sector. We are looking forward to discuss the proposed update of the transmission code with the partners in Indonesia, to make sure it becomes a practicable and grid-stabilising frame for the Indonesian growth of VRE.
