In May 2025, Energynautics, together with Thüga AG and enwarp gmbh, introduced a new web-based forecasting tool that provides customized load and generation development scenarios at the low-voltage level — local, data-driven and future-proof. The web portal enables DSOs in Germany to conduct hosting capacity assessments and advance grid expansion securely and sustainably based on precise modeling.

Navigating the complexities of the energy transition

The pressure on existing grid infrastructures is increasing due to the rising electrification of the mobility and heating sectors, and the expansion of decentralized power generation— especially driven by households. These new distributed energy resources (DERs) create new load and generation peaks that require precise planning. This is where the new forecasting tool developed by Energynautics in collaboration with geodata specialist enwarp comes in.

A new hands-on tool for distribution system operators in Germany

Based on a robust bottom-up approach the tool analyzes technical, geographical and socio-economic data to predict the long-term development of electric vehicle charging stations, heat pumps, and PV rooftop systems. Both the spatial distribution and expected peak power of new consumers and generators are considered, down to the level of individual household connections.

The web portal provides DSOs with a flexible solution for fast and simple modeling and evaluation of a wide range of scenarios. Political framework conditions and technological trends can be flexibly incorporated into the analyses. Since the system maps all key load and generation drivers, the results can be directly integrated into existing grid planning processes, especially for long-term distribution network development plans and hosting capacity analyses.

Tested in pilot projects — ready for widespread use

The web portal was developed as part of the Thüga Group’s “Future-Proof Power Grids” project. The underlying methodology was successfully tested and refined in several pilot projects with German distribution system operators EWR Netz GmbH, Energienetze Mittelrhein GmbH, and Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz GmbH.

Thüga AG, Energynautics, and enwarp officially presented the tool in a joint webinar. Since May 2025, the portal has been available to all interested distribution system operators throughout Germany. Utilities and DSOs beyond Germany are also invited to explore partnership opportunities and discover how the tool can be tailored to meet their specific needs.
