Ancillary Services from Offshore Wind in the UK and Germany
Energynautics together with UK-based Frazer Nash Consultancy (FNC) were commissioned to undertake the Ancillary Services from Offshore Wind project for a large industry consortium on behalf of Carbon Trust. The objective was to identify high system value ancillary services which offshore wind farms are well suited to deliver in the current and future grid in Germany and the UK.
Energynautics conducted the following assignments:
- Market analysis of the ancillary services for revenue benchmarking
- HVAC and HVDC grid code and ancillary service prequalification reviews for technical requirements
- Regulation and policy review for barrier and market design change analysis
- Comparative analysis of services between UK and Germany, when applicable
- A state-of-the-art market review of available technologies and assessment of which technologies can be implemented as part of an offshore wind farm to enable them to provide ancillary services differentiated by connection types
- Interviews with TSOs, OEMs, regulators and developers aimed at finding the need and application cases including the technologies in the development phase
- Webinar presentations to a wider audience
- Scenario and parameter construction for German CBA considering whole-life costs and value of services provided
The study benefitted the industry through:
- Informing further studies and development work on technologies able to provide ancillary services as part of an offshore wind farm
- Informing the offshore wind industry about market needs
- Giving an overview of ancillary services that can be provided by offshore wind and
- Providing an understanding of the barriers that prevent greater ancillary service provision from offshore wind
