Islands as Living Labs for Demand-Side Management

Testing innovative DSM solutions in closed systems to support grid stability, VRE integration, and Europe’s climate goals

Energynautics is the coordinator of the new Research & Innovation project DSM4islands. “DSM4islands” is short for “Integrated Demand-Side Management as flexibility driver for the energy transition using the example of island power systems“. This 3-years project is a dynamic CETPartnership, aiming to accelerate the clean energy transition on European islands.

The project focuses on developing solutions that demonstrate the value of Demand-Side Management (DSM) for maximizing the share and improving the reliable operation of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) in power systems across different geographies and climates. Island power systems, where VRE integration significantly affects grid stability, are the key elements of the DSM4islands project. These smaller, self-contained grids not only show a high demand for flexibility solutions, but they also serve as ideal testing grounds for innovative flexibility schemes like DSM.

The DSM solutions developed within this project will be piloted on the islands of Cyprus and Lampedusa, providing valuable insights that can be applied to other islands, microgrids, and larger power systems.

To deliver on its goals, DSM4islands unites a transnational consortium combining academic and industry expertise. The partners include two leading research institutions—University of Cyprus (Cyprus) and University of Palermo (Italy)—and three experienced private companies in the renewable energy sector: EPL Technology Frontiers LTD (Cyprus), Exalto Energy & Innovation S.r.l. (Italy), and Energynautics (Germany).

As knowledge transfer is an integral part of the DSM4islands project, interested parties are invited to visit the project website www.dsm4islands.eu for detailed information, upcoming events and related publications.

Regular updates will be posted on the DSM4islands LinkedIn page.
