Grid Codes:
An Essential Tool for Secure Grid Integration of Renewable Energies
Grid Codes provide important rules and standards for modern power systems. Regardless of whether the power system is vertically integrated, with a share of private power generators, or completely unbundled, the Grid Codes define the technical regulations for all active participants in the power system. Generation facilities in particular have to comply with these regulations in order to get access to the grid. Besides the regulations for grid access, the Grid Codes also provide regulations for planning, system management and communication.
Why are Grid Codes necessary?
In contrast to the traditional system topology with few central power generators, many modern energy supply systems involve a large number of actors. These include local power generators, adjustable loads, storage and other privately owned units. All of these units affect system operation and therefore have to perform according to regulation, both during standard operation and during fault cases. The Grid Code defines this behavior for all participants to avoid the need for bilateral negotiations. Especially if a network operator is legally obligated to grant access to the grid for compliant power generators, a well-defined and suitable Grid Code is essential.
What is part of a Grid Code?
Grid Codes can contain regulations for grid operation as well as for connected power generators and for consumers. For the integration of renewable and/or decentralized generation, these issues are vitally important:
- Regulations for the required voltage quality and the permissible local system impact (harmonics, flicker, voltage magnitude)
- Definition of the required active and reactive power control modes
- Behavior of the unit during faults: over- or under-voltage or frequency deviations
- Communication interfaces, which allow the network operator to access the unit
- Criteria for simulation models
Furthermore, Grid Codes can also contain regulations for market operation, for grid management, for allocation of transfer capacities and more. The exact scope of the Grid Code varies from country to country and from network operator to network operator.
