Smart inverters for distributed generation

Role and capabilities of smart inverters for distributed generation

Mexico currently sees a rapid growth of inverter-based distributed generation, in particular solar PV. Smart inverter capabilities however are currently not or little enforced. The project therefore aimed to highlight different inverter capabilities and their cost and benefits to the power system in order to improve the landscape for smart inverter requirements in Mexico.

The development and current requirements for inverter capabilities were analyzed in California, Hawaii, Germany and South Australia and compared to the current requirements in Mexico. Further, a survey was conducted amongst PV developers to analyze the current inverter landscape. Recommendations were drafted with view on the development of renewable distributed generation in Mexico and current needs and requirements of the Mexican electricity network.
