Today the German distribution network operator EWR Netz GmbH is already experiencing high reverse power flows due to wind and solar power. Voltage and overload problems are the consequence. New innovative technologies and changes in the operation of the network have the potential to curb otherwise necessary grid reinforcements.
DESIGNETZ aims to test these new technologies on a wide scale and to find cost optimal solutions. Wide area voltage control, voltage regulators and reactive power control are possible remedies, supported by a large Smart Meter rollout. Energynautics analyses the different options and their respective impact to guarantee an effective expansion of renewables and to infer general recommendations for the research project. A key aim is as well to put the BDEW traffic light concept into practice in order to test the possibilities of a future flexibility market.
